Commentary by Anthony Kent:

A tight win due to the strength of the Insurance middle boards.

We started with a default win when Mike Wiltshire’s opponent failed to show. Gary Callan lost quickly in an advanced French when his opponents queen infiltrated. Paul Barclay won a piece early on, giving a 2-1 lead. Ian Calvert then drew, and Anthony Kent drew by perpetual check after overstretching. 3-2 Nick Faulks lost a combative Polish Opening on board 1 with Black. James Aldred survived and flourished giving up 3 pawns for his opponent’s piece sacrifice Ian Hunnable won a piece for two pawns.

A good sequence of wins and draws then gave Insurance a 7½-4½ lead. David Sedgwick drew a same coloured bishops ending a pawn down. Geoff Naldrett lost the final game.

With the opportunity to wrap up the successful retention of the trophy, Insurance took no chances and raised their strongest team of the campaign, outgrading Commercial on every board. Even so, scores were level over the top ten boards, testifying to dogged resistance by the home team, but Insurance strength in depth told as they took 3½/4 on the remaining boards to win 8½-5½ and retain the silver knight.
