The 1998/99 competition once more took place without the participation of Civil Service. They had indicated that if the number of boards was reduced to 16 they would be able to enter a team, but unfortunately this was too late in the day to enable the necessary arrangements to be put in place for this season’s competition.

The contest between the remaining four teams proved tense and exciting and was not decided until the very last match.

Banks, going for a hat trick of Bronowski titles, were this season beset by defaults. In their opening encounter with Legal this did not, however, prevent them from continuing their winning ways: conceding five boards by default, they won 12½-7½ with a near clean-sweep in the upper order.

Insurance, without a win in 97/8, opened their campaign at home to Commercial and gained the decision by 11-9. In the next fixture, Banks once more conceded several boards by default, when visiting Insurance. The home team were grateful for this concession as they were down 7-9 on the contested boards, but with the four default wins, recorded their second win 11-9 to take pole position.

The next fixture again involved Insurance who would complete their campaign away to Legal and could have rendered the remaining fixtures academic. Needing only to draw the match, Insurance reached 9½ points with several games still in play, but the extra half point needed failed to materialise as Legal took all the remaining games to repeat last season’s 10½-9½ win.

This, of course, put everything back in the melting point and with just two fixtures left, each of the four teams could still win the Bronowski Trophy, but with no team now able to score more than 2 match points, tie-break rules would decide. Banks were best placed, needing a win against Commercial (the higher score the better, to hold off Legal); Legal would overhaul Insurance on game points if they beat Commercial by 13½-6½ but would need a correspondingly higher score to better Banks’ game points total if the latter beat Commercial; while Commercial, with most to do, could win if they beat Banks and Legal scoring 23 points in the process. If none of these eventualities came about, Insurance would be left winners.

Legal’s bid for glory fell as they went down 8-11 to Commercial, who thus remained on course. The last fixture, Banks at home to Commercial, would decide. Banks simply needed to win, as their game points total would automatically exceed that of Insurance, whereas Commercial needed to win by 12-8 or better (11½-8½ would leave match and game points tied with Insurance, but the title would be decided in the latter’s favour due to the result of their individual match at the start of the season).

Banks’ hopes were dashed when a further four boards were conceded without a fight and a well-represented Commercial team took the match; but alas the score of 11-9 left them one game point short and left Insurance as this season’s Bronowski champions, on game points.
